Europe Square – Batumi‘s Central Cultural Hub

Located in the heart of Batumi‘s historic center, Europe Square (also known as Argonauts Square) serves as the central gathering place and cultural hub of the city. Situated along Memed Abashidze Avenue, this captivating public space seamlessly blends 19th and 20th-century architecture with modern elements, creating a unique ambiance that reflects Georgia‘s deep historical ties to Europe. The Statue of Medea: Symbol of Georgian-European Connection

The centerpiece and undisputed highlight of Europe Square is the monument to Medea, which was unveiled on July 6, 2007 by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.

Design & Appearance

On a slender, white marble-clad pedestal stands a bronze statue of the Colchian princess Medea, designed in the style of ancient Greek art. The elegant figure presents the Golden Fleece in her outstretched hand – a symbol of the wealth, prosperity, and cultural significance of the ancient Kingdom of Colchis, which once existed on the territory of present-day western Georgia.

The statue creates a stunning visual effect through the color contrast of the slender green-patina figure of Medea and the gilded elements of her hairstyle, the ram‘s fleece, and an ornamental grating at her feet.

The Argo at the Base

Near the base of the pillar, Jason and the Argonauts are depicted in their legendary ship, the Argo. This detail completes one of the most famous tales of Greek mythology: how Medea, enchanted by her love for Jason, helped the Argonauts steal the Golden Fleece from her father King Aietes of Colchis before escaping with them on the Argo.

Mythological & Cultural Significance
